Fasting with IBS

Does anyone have any experience fasting with IBS? I often find that if I leave it too long between meals that I struggle, but I’ve also heard fasting can help. Has anyone found a way to do this well? Would it be best to do long fasts, e.g. a day at a time, or should I maybe avoid fasting? I’m lost!

My sister told me I probably have IBS. Sometime after a large dinner I have to poo. And I need to go like 3-5x/day sometimes. It this all depends on how much I eat. I’m 37 hours into a fast and I pooed at the beginning and just now. And I think that’s the end of my poos until I start eating again.

Curious, what happens to you if you “leave it too long between meals”? Do you get stomach aches if you dont eat?

Answer

Fellow sufferer. I recommend a day at a time max until you know how your body copes. If i am not extremely careful, I get extreme bowel burning and diarrhea when I try to break even a 24-hour fast. And it persists for a few days, causing even more bowel distress. The only thing that works for me is chicken bone broth only the first 24 hours post-fast, then the BRAT diet for a couple of days after. The plus side is, once it’s all done, I feel much better than I did before.
