I’ve been seeing a lot about fish oil supplements lately, the claim is that the western diet usually neglects omega 3, while providing an adequate amount of omega 6. The solution being fish oil supplements, to improve health and well-being as well as aide in achieving fitness and wellness goals.
I’m not usually one for buying into these things based on random articles and advertisements but I am curious if anyone has anecdotal evidence regarding the effectiveness/uselessness of fish oil.
Yes - so basically my whole family has allergies that causes our skin to break out.
We are in three different households, after we started taking fish oil all of our symptoms have lowered significantly or gone away all together. My partner has lowered his usage of allergy pills from 1-2 per day to 1-2 per month. I no longer have symptoms of certain of my allergies.
If I neglect taking them for three+ days, I am guaranteed that my skin will break out violently.
We’ve been eating it daily for the last 1-2 years.
Fish oil can be effective if the brand/quality is great. The health benefits of Omega 3 cannot be overstated.
However, it’s also a waste of money, since you can get better value without side effects from just consuming fish in your diet.
I would advise to look for peer-reviewed evidence, not anecdotal. I could say that fish oil gave me a heart attack and my word would be just as credible as anyone else’s anecdote.
Fish oil supplementation has not always shown that it will protect from adverse cardiovascular events, but this recent meta-analysis suggests they can. Interestingly, this piece of evidence favored EPA alone over EPA+DHA.
