Fruit & Nuts/Seeds

The information online seems very mixed and widely-inaccurate so I wanted to get the opinions of people in the nutrition community..

Fruit seems to be very healthy but can potentially become unhealthy when consumed in excess due to all the sugar.

The same applies for nuts/seeds since they are so high in calories.

Would it be a good idea for an individual to substitute a piece of fruit or nuts/nut butters for a snack (or a dessert) after a meal, for example?

Google also says that fruits and nuts should not be eaten with other foods such as meat. Is this accurate? What happens if a person consumes nuts/seeds/fruit with dinner at night?

Curious to hear your thoughts on this bogus claim from Google..

Answer

Foods like fruit and nuts are overall healthy. But it’s a question of your particular needs abs tolerances.

Some folks are highly allergic to many nuts for example. Or some folks need to be careful about gaining weight and lots of fruits and nuts may not fit into their caloric needs.

They are much healthier than many other options like processed snacks so if you were going for a cookie an apple is healthier than a cookie. Nuts are healthier than a pile of chips.

So rather than focus on if it is healthy perhaps focus on your overall nutrition and how it will fit into a balanced diet.

Cronometer website or app could help you figure that out.

Never heard of that and it kind of sounds like fake news, but am happy to learn if anyone has something to back up those claims.

The sugar in fruits really only is a “problem” due to its calories. Same goes for the fat in nuts. And while it actually is rather easy to consume quite a number of calories by simply eating nuts, it’s really not that easy eating that many calories with fruits, since they are still mostly water and quite filling.

Now, fruits and nuts will - nutritional wise - always beat a “snack/dessert”, since the calories are accompanied by loads of really great stuff… which does not mean that you can’t have desserts (obviously).

Basically, don’t worry about fruits and nuts/seeds too much. Maybe try to get a feeling for how many calories are in a handful of nuts so you get an idea, but other than that, there really are far worse things you could do than overeating fruits and nuts.
