Getting started..with a major hurtle

I (M40) have tried IF for several years now, and have had minimal success. I attributed most of this due to having a bad work schedule, a newborn…and a wife with a eating disorder. She (F39) dieted for her entire life and her weight fluctuated a lot. She went to an eating disorder group for a year or so, and decided to never diet again. I’m happy for her. I really am. I, on the other hand, have never dieted and have been overweight my entire adult life. I want to lose weight with IF, but she is really against it for reasons previously mentioned. I have been skipping meals when I can, but I cannot stay consistent if I’m keeping it from her. I have lost maybe 5 lbs- nothing noticeable, despite having tried for a month. Any advice on how to break this to her so she will take my efforts seriously and not personalize it?

Answer

It’s only disordered eating if you’re hungry but forcing yourself not to eat.

If you eat a protein-focused diet then you will naturally be able to go many, many hours between eating because you’ve properly fueled up your body and given it what it needs. If you eat the correct amount of protein then you’ll only ever be hungry twice per day, so there’s your IF schedule happening automatically because of what you’re eating
