Getting the runs after breaking 30ish hour fast.

I am trying to settle into ADF as a repeatable fast for me to lose some weight, I am eating low carbohydrate, nothing processed and I find when I break my 30-35Hour fast in the morning, I always get terrible runs.

I’m normally breaking fast with some natural yoghurt, few berries, dried goji berries, some sunflower and chia seeds and a overloaded tablespoon of peanut butter.

Then normally an hour afterwards I am debilitated by it.

After that I’ll eat some.eggs and salad and avocado, then some meat and veggies lunches and dinners, to no adverse effects. Does anyone have any input or help?!

My wife is frustrated because my temper already struggles on fasting days, then I lose lots of time, going back and forth to the loo, meant for helping in the mornings with her and the kids. She says that every day is hard with this, on and off therefore.

Answer

The fast breaker sounds too high in carbs and sugar - berries plus goji berries, plus gut irritating seeds and peanut butter does not sound ideal. Consider a small piece of meat or a smaller version of your dinner.

Are you taking electrolytes, could be too much at once? This may be unrelated to what you are breaking your fast with. I would also try breaking your fast with something simpler like avocado. I read that eggs give some people problems when breaking a fast.

Answer

It seems like the digestive system starts to go in to a resting state after a prolonged absence of food intake and reacts to a sudden influx of new food by having a clear out of the old. I’d suggest just having a bit of the yogurt first thing, to gently get your system going, then the rest a couple of hours later.
