Glucose raising during workout?

Hi all, I’ve recently found out I’m prediabetic and was advised to try intermittent fasting by a dietician.

I’ve started trying 16/8 and 20/4 IF intervals and have started working out shortly after I break my fast.

I noticed that during strength training my glucose rises to ~120mg/dl even if I have a low/no carb meal beforehand. Outside of working out my glucose stays consistently around 80 mg/dl. I was wondering if this is normal and is okay considering my prediabetic condition?

Answer

Good question.

Glucose is supposed to rise during workouts. It’s to rebuild/refill the glycogen used during your workout. It’s a good thing.

As a diabetic (pre or otherwise) there are natural peaks of blood glucose that you want. What you don’t want is chronically elevated blood glucose. Glad to see your dietician embracing IF.

Hopefully they’re encouraging you to eat low carb as well. Telling diabetics to eat 200g of carbs per meal is like telling an alcoholic to limit themselves to only 2 drinks per meal. It’s wild that this is the standard.

I’m prediabetic as well. I just had a conversation with my endocrinologist about blood sugar, he said that a glucose reading of up to 200 in a pre is acceptable as long as it comes back down in a couple of hours. I use an Accu Chek Guide test meter and the My Sugr app from the makers of the meter. It’s helpful for staying in range. I just started Mounjaro treatment to bring my weight down, because I had lost 30 pounds from IF and hit a plateau where no more was dropping off. Hope that helps.
