Going the distance

Hey all,

I am currently planning an extended fast upwards of 7 days. My goal is 11 I would really like to hit at least 7 and if my body allows it I will go as long as possible or 21 days, whichever comes first

Currently I am a bit overweight with about a BMI of 30. My reasoning for this fast is to hopefully manage health issues. I have never done a fast like this only around 48ish hours and most of the time eat low carb and have done intermittent fasting for awhile now. I know many say to work up to it but I just feel like I’d rather do this all at once. Obviously it will be uncomfortable but I also will listen to my body and cut the fast if it’s too much

I wanted to ask some advice on doing a fast like this. Right now all that is in my mind is just going about my day and drinking snake juice or buying fasting salts (any brand recommendations?)

My main concerns are refeeding after such a long period and also fucking something up, not sure what or how but you never know

Any advice/tips/warnings?

Thanks

Answer

  1. Choose a concrete goal. You’re kinda all over the place with 7, 11, 21. Not to downplay your 48 hours but that’s really not that long. Especially when you’re looking at scales of weeks.

  2. Everyone is different, but typically after day 3/4 the hunger goes away. If you have a very labor intensive job or are very active during the day, I’d probably recommend IF/OMAD instead, you want to keep activity pretty light during this time.

  3. Just keep up on your electrolytes. If you feel dizzy, drink some. If you’re pretty sedentary you don’t need to chug a gallon of water a day. Just drink when you’re thirsty.

  4. Break the fast as you usually would. Bone broth, watermelon etc.

  5. Most important tip. This will all be a waste of time if you go back to your old eating habits. It is very easy to do and unfortunately most people do it. Take this time to reflect on the path forward for when you break the fast. Find new hobbies and avoid boredom at all costs to minimize the thought of eating.
