Hair loss (telogen effluvium) after 72h water fast

This spring I was exploring fasting a bit, just curious to see what it would do for my body. I didn’t want to loose weight and I don’t fast anymore (just intermittent fasting).

Two months after my 72h water fast I noticed my hair started to fall out. It’s shedding like crazy. I’ve read this can happen and I just take it how it comes (I initiated this myself :p). But just wondering if people who also experienced this could tell how long it lasted? And after how long did it regrow?

I think you should look into if something else is causing your hair loss. If your fast was only 72hrs and two months ago, it seems like a big jump to assume one is caused by the other.

Just my two cents

Hi! This happened to me. It was a very brief period of hair loss, I stopped shedding pretty much within a week. There are lots of reasons why hair loss can happen during a fast. I have really thin hair to begin with, so ngl it’s been a deterrent for doing any extend fasts again, but it was a very short lived period of loss and I was back to normal again very quickly. If you’re concerned, or if you’re really losing a lot of hair and it doesn’t stop soon I would see a doctor about it. But in most cases that I’ve seen it isn’t really something to worry about.

It is hard to tell how long it took to regrow since it didn’t come out in patches or anything, it was all over my head. But I think I did notice some new growth in about a month. Hope this helps!

might be related to the water flushing out.crucial.minerals to maintain hair health? like zink for example.

Could be alao you become more aware of your body. I for example have a yearly hairloss around spring and they regrow en masse afterwards. like a winter fur lol

Answer

Yes unfortunately this happened to me years ago. I did a 14 day fast and about 3 or 4 months later, I was told my root sheaths were diminishing. Indicating I was experiencing hair loss. I’m not an expert but perhaps the fast shocked some roots into a ‘resting phase’, therefore causing the hairs to stop actively growing and shed away.

It’ll come back, at least mine did. Regrowth maybe took a year with supplements and scalp stimulating products. I remember that the shed lasted months, though. Guess I’ll find out again after this 20 day fast lol🙃

Hey OP, I had hair thinning about 6-8 weeks after doing a multi day fast. It lasted a few days or a week and then it regrew completely and pretty fast, I think within a week or two after, it was back to normal.

You guys should look into other deficiencies. I would think a 72 hour fast would not be a massive system shock. Maybe. :) my sister is going through telogen effluvium right now - following a series of extended fasts - probably 5 or 6 88/8 cycles. However, she got blood work done and her ferritin is LOW - she’s clinically deficient, even though her number falls in the range. I truly believe that other deficiencies can sort of be “triggered” from fasting and in her case I believe this is it.
