Hey, y'all! So, let's talk about nutrition science.

You know what they say: you are what you eat. And if that’s true, then I’m probably a pizza with a side of fries. But in all seriousness, nutrition is important, and it’s fascinating to learn about the science behind it. Macronutrients, micronutrients, vitamins, diets…it can all get a little overwhelming. But don’t worry, we’re all in this together. And as long as we’re having civil discourse, we can learn a lot from each other. So let’s get talking, folks! What are some of your favorite nutrition tips and tricks? And what’s the craziest diet you’ve ever tried? I’ll start: I once tried the grapefruit diet, but then I realized that life is too short to only eat grapefruits.

I’ve been studying this recently trying to focus on scientifically support research on types of foods, eating patterns, health benefits of fasting etc. and the main takeaways that I’ve found are to eat whole foods not processed, incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables and legumes and beans. Try to give your body a rest by having at least a 12 hour “fasting” period which includes your sleep time and cut out or greatly reduce free sugars and alcohol. Add some fermented foods and spices and herbs. There is so much conflicting information that it is really difficult to reconcile but our metabolism is very complex and there is a lot that we don’t even know yet. Apparently full fat dairy may have a protective effect and if you are going to eat meat grass fed naturally raised meat, chicken and eggs are probably better. Instead of the old dietary plate of lots of grains and carbs possibly more vegetables and fiber is healthier.

Honestly, no matter how many crazy diets and programmes, shakes, cleanses, detoxes, powders and what have you churn out every year, the science still sticks with the balanced portion that’s been around for ages, with very little changing over the years…

since i am studying in nutrition, i know that diets simply don’t work. they don’t, they are unsustainable. aka keto diet and whole 30 etc. SURE if it works for you, go ahead it works for you! BUT the majority of the population has shown that it doesn’t work because it’s not long term type of diet. im glad you’re fascinated with nutrition, i am too! hence why i’m studying to become a dietitian. another thing i like to point out is the dose makes the poison. to people that sit there and say “i’m cutting out sugar because this” “um cutting out carbs because it’s bad” “ice cream is bad for you” NO! just no. STOP labeling ingredients and food that are bad if you’re uneducated about it. STOP demonizing foods just because you heard a post online that pizza is bad for you. the dose makes the poison. i love pizza, ice cream, chips, and more, and i will continue to eat it! absolutely no good dietitian will tell you to subtract from your everyday diet, instead they will tell you to ADD to it. eat your favorite foods while adding more fiber, fat, and protein to it. have a good day.
