high bilirubin levels

Hi everyone,

I had to end a 120hr dry fast about 80 hours in because i noticed i started to have pain on my side and jaundice. i went to the ER immediately and they told me my bilirubin levels were really high and i had excess bile building up. The doctor said that it’s “normal” and “happens” and just discharged me and prescribed me medication. I really didn’t get the explanation i wanted and wonder if it correlates to me dry fasting. Can anyone explain?

Answer

It doesn’t really answer your question I suppose but: bile acids are related to water homeostasis somehow (for example the kidneys must retain more water when there are bile acids in the blood). I also think it could be the elevated vasopressin (an antidiuretic hormone) that increases the production of bile.

As your problem doesn’t happen to everyone that dry fast, I believe it might be associated with liver or gallblader issues like stones, that could impair the bile flux in the gut.
