High protein, low GI rice?

There’s a fad food here in southern Louisiana called Parish Rice, supposedly it’s a non-GMO rice (so just traditionally cross-bred?) that has more protein and lower GI than other white rice. It costs about double normal white rice, and I can’t taste nor feel a difference. It triggers my skeptic sense, like I’m being duped by marketing. Being charged more because they tell me it’s better even though I can’t tell it is.

What does Reddit think? Yay / nay?

Answer

The difference is protein is really negligible. White rice has 3g of protein per serving, and this rice has 5g protein per serving. It may be “53% more”, but it’s 53% more of a very small amount to start with. The absolute amount of protein is still very low - lower than most other grains, actually.

Answer

I would just go brown rice at that point. This rice has no fiber which brown rice has. As far as the protein content, 5g is really not a lot, you would need to eat 130g of carbs to get 20g of protein. Brown rice also has a lower GI than white rice. But unless you are really strict on your carbs or have some form of diabetes, there is no real reason to stress about GI anyway.
