How do I handle fueling for a Half Marathon with IF?

I’ve been doing IF very successfully for about 5 weeks now. I aim for 19 hours fasting a day and have a few 20/21 hour fasts. I usually open my eating window around 2-3p. Not sure how to approach some upcoming races this weekend. Running a 10K Fri morning which I’m not overly concerned about not eating before. I am a little concerned about not eating something before my Half Marathon on Sat morning at 5a though.

Do I just not worry about hitting my goal one day. In the past before this type of race I don’t eat much but do have a little to eat like toast with peanut butter and honey. Obviously this will break my fast. Just curious if anyone has any strategies for this.

Answer

Not a runner, but on heavy workout days I skip fasting. I do ski touring (hiking with skis and maybe 30lbs of gear) and I’ve tried fasting until I’m finished with the uphill (3-4hrs of cardio usually) and it always ends poorly. I get super hangry and weak after 45 mins and it makes me ready to give up so early. I’ll maybe try to do a 12 hour fast ending before I start so I can eat, or start a fast that evening after I’m done/have recovered. I’d rather break fast and finish my trek than keep fasting and not be able to do it :)
