Hi there
I have a question. So I have been fasting for a prolonged period. It was my second fast (the first was a while back, for 21days) and now again for 10days. The break has been 5days ago and I want to continue with Intermittent Fasting as I did before. I will usually fast on 2days a week (Monday and Thursday) not eating anything. The thing is, that I eat mostly plant-based and I also eat once a day only in the late afternoon/evening for health and environmental reasons. This way of eating helps me a lot with focusing and fighting attention deficit and concentration problems. I feel lighter, quicker and more productive. I do eat meat, dairy and eggs if I know and can trust the source, or when I am invited or trying a new speciality I don’t know yet as I am passionate about good food (I am travelling since over 1.5years….). I am not strict, but the last time I ate something coming from an animal is 2months ago.
What I want to say by that is, that unlike a lot of people writing here, my diet is very high in carbs (vegetables and fruit, unrefined and unprocessed whole foods). My plates are usually high in volume, I eat very slowly, consciously and sometimes spend 1-2hours eating and chewing :)
I didn’t know Jason Fung before and got kinda curious how he usually breaks a prolonged fast?
Is it better to get back to eating the full load of required calories quite quickly and fast intermittently as soon as possible or do I first have to go through a low calorie period?
I am confused, as usually long fasts are broken by slowly incorporating different and more calorie dense foods, but he wrote something about boosting the metabolism, by giving ones body the calories it needs.
I will have to get his book as soon as I settled down, but until then I hope that you guys might help me.
He says to break a fast with something small 30 minutes before your main meal, to get your digestive system ready and avoid discomfort.
He also says to eat enough food to feel full so that you keep your metabolism high. If you eat, but not enough, and you are still hungry after a meal then your metabolism will slow down over time. It’s better to eat more food and do an extra day of fasting than it is to eat too little food.
