How do you combat acid reflux while fasting?

I get a burning feeling in my stomach when I don’t eat, it doesn’t happen all the time bur is there a way to help with this?

Is it as simple as taking an antacid like tums?

Answer

It depends on the type of acid.

Some people find relief from baking soda (like another comment said, put a small spoonful in a glass of water).

Some have relief from doing the same, but with apple cider vinegar.

If it’s really bad and you’re not fasting for autophagy, a small bit of cream of tartar with baking soda is better.

If you’re doing IF or shorter fasts, stocking up on a probiotic and digestive enzymes can help, as well when you re-feed.

If this is something that’s started from fasting (you don’t have any GERD/etc when eating) for most people it does eventually regulate the more you fast. For a lot of people, it’s caused by the body creating excess stomach acid due to expecting food. The body eventually wisens up!

Edit to add; also make sure you’re not drinking any coffee (a lot of people take it black while fasting)! It exacerbates the issue due to the acid in the coffee for many.

Pro-tip, sleep on your left side. It also helps with acid reflux.
