Dr Fung has said that low carb and fasting are crucial for permanent weight loss, but after reading his articles and the Obesity Code, to me, it looks like unless you have diabetes, fasting and not eating below maintenance on feasting days alone should cause permanent weight loss. Is this correct? I agree that a low carb diet would be more effective, but when we’re talking about weight regain, is it really necessary if you want to maintain your metabolism and hormone levels such as ghrelin and leptin? Keep in mind, I’m not talking about a diet full of refined carbs, I’m talking about stuff like fruit, vegetables, beans, brown rice and oats which is basically a plant based, vegan diet.
Yes, it is very important if you want to eat a ketogenic diet.
No, it’s not super important if you want to eat a low carb diet. The important part is keeping your insulin down during the day. If you eat fats and proteins, insulin will spike for an hour or 2. If you eat carbs like pasta and rice and potatoes, your insulin will spike for up to 4 hours. It is possible to measure the effects if you get a glucometer.
