How often can I drink coffee, tea, electrolyte powders, ect?

I’m about to start my longest fast yet (5 days) and I was curious as to how often I can drink things with minimal calories without breaking my fast. I like to drink black coffee and put a little bit of lemon juice in my water and things like that. I know the general rule is to stay under 10 calories or so and you should be safe but these things may add up to more than that in the span of a few hours and I’m not sure if it would take away from the benefits of my fast. I’m trying to get the most bang for my buck with fasting benefits.

Answer

You can enjoy all the 0 kcal food and drinks you like as long as they don’t contain artificial sweeteners since I’m assuming you’re doing this for autophagy more than weight loss. The effects of artificial sweeteners on autophagy are unclear but some studies say there is an insulin response (which would negatively affect autophagy). Regarding electrolytes, I like to split it up into 3 ‘doses’ per day (morning/later afternoon/evening).
