Answer

You can lose weight even when consuming “bad sugar” and you can gain weight when consuming only “healthy” foods. It’s all a matter of calories in versus calories out (burned). Other things like hydration and micronutrients play a role in overall weight gain/loss but its effect varies largely. Calories from grains or table sugar is same per gram (4kcal/g). So if you are now eating 2 whole grain muffins rather than a piece of wonder bread you’ll gain weight.

Getting rid of added “bad” sugar is a good step don’t get me wrong. Less inflammation, better insulin response, and many more metabolic benefits.

If you’re feeling less satiated increase fiber content.

Answer

You say whole grain as in breads? Because when I have a high intake of breads and other grain based carbs, I hold about 3lbs more of water weight. When I cut carbs down to around 20-40 grams a day, I’ll lose it in a matter of days.

Answer

Quitting sugar should help you lose weight. I don’t make it a hard rule, though, personally. But whole grain bread is about the same thing. I recommend looking at ways to increase your metabolic flexibility - optimally people should be able to go a few days without carbs and not really suffer from it, for example. Or eat one meal a day and still get stuff done. If you can do those things, I think it is okay to eat carbs - even white sugar.

Answer

Weight sometimes means nothing, body composition does. Weight can be influenced by a shit ton of factors as water retention, fiber intake, etc. If you are worried about fat gain maybe after cutting sugar you are eating more food in general or added calorically dense ingredients, foods. Try tracking caloric intake for a week

Answer

When trying to lose weight don’t focus on one thing like sugar. Most basic but true concept of weight loss is calories in versus calories out. Try to eat meals that fill you up but aren’t calorie dense.

Answer

Good job cutting out sugar. Not something most people can do.

Has the elimination of sugar resulted in lower total carbs, day to day? I would make sure carbs overall have dropped and look to replace those lost calories with protein and fat if your hungry and having carb cravings.

Of course in the long run you still want to lower overall calories to lose weight but I would prioritize healthy fats and proteins over even healthy carbs if you need to.
