I want to incorporate 36 hr fasts but am nervous!

I am solo parenting 2 small children, I have to have energy and be in healthy state to take care of them. I’m currently 30 lbs down by doing a loose 16:8 but I want to step it up a little. I’m scared I’ll be sick or faint, or weak or too tired to take proper care of my kids. Can I get some info from those who’ve done this and how it felt and advice to incorporate this in healthy way? Many thanks!

Why risk it? What if you pass out while driving the kids around? What if you’re wrapping up your fast and one of the kids needs a trip to the ER? (Mine always did stupid stuff that had me sitting in the ER for hours waiting to be seen)

Slow and steady is progress. Rather than fasting longer, why not work out more? Like take a longer walk, or play longer at the park? Amp up that metabolism.

I’ve never done 36 hours, but have gone past 24 hours several times. You need to build up to it slowly. Start with 17, 18, 19 and then increase the duration from there. If you feel faint, or if you feel extremely hungry, break your fast. There’s no rush, 30lbs is a great achievement.

Congratulations on losing 30 pounds!

When I think about a bit longer fast, I make my last meal especially rich in protein, good fat, and fibre. I try to eat dish I really like and find filling.During the fast, I remember taking electrolytes and drinking plenty of water and tea. I found out that I actually like exercising in a fasted state. I don’t get overboard ever and most definitely not during a longer fast. Walking is great for that occasion!I always remember that I can break my fast early. It’s giving my psychological comfort. I would do it if I did not feel well, weak, fainty, or nauseous. Although I would start with taking electrolytes first. It didn’t happen to me so far. I also plan how to break my fast. Bone broth or something rich in protein and fat. Avocado, eggs, or smoked salmon are my favourites lately.I discovered that cooking just before breaking my fast is a bit torturus, and I prefer preparing my meal beforehand.

Good luck! You can do it!

If you’re doing 16:8, personally I wouldn’t jump straight to 36 hr. I’ve been doing 16:8 on and off for years and am just starting to sprinkle 20:4’s in. It’s a push for me, I can’t imagine diving straight into 36 hr. That’s just my opinion though.

Congrats on 30lb down!

IMO 36 hours is totally doable while running after little ones, etc. It is really just one full day of no food plus two overnights. And if you start to feel headachy or weak you can just eat something - no refeed issues at that fasting length. Congrats on your fantastic progress so far.

Answer

As long as you are staying hydrated and including salt so your electrolytes stay at the right level you shouldn’t feel bad at all. I fast 48 hours twice a week and have gone up to 120 hours without experiencing any fatigue or other side effects as long as I remember to take salt regularly. I workout every morning even on extended fasts without problem. You will have energy to care for your kids.
