IF and antidepressants

Hi everyone!

I am on a low dose of a SSRI. It greatly increases my appetite, and I struggle to only consume the needed calories in a day.

Anyone who is willing to share if IF helped them with this? What type of fasting/feeding routine worked?

Okay so I’m not sure what med you’re on but a few years ago I was on a low dose of citalipram (celexa) I could not control my appetite and gained 80lbs. The med was not the only factor, I also had a major career change and started grad school around the same time but the cravings began before the other changes. Prior to that I was very in control of my eating habits.

This experience led me to believe that ssri meds are not for me.

I am now on a low dose of a different medication and for the first time in years, my appetite is fully under control without any effort and my anxiety is also manageable.

My advice is to talk with your doctor and see if there are other medication options you could explore to manage all of your concerns. I seriously regret not raising my voice about what was happening to my body. I punished myself for a long time for something that wasn’t totally my fault. I hope to gain back control of my body now that I’m feeling more balanced.

Not sure if this will help, but I manage my depression (severe and goin on 20+ years, so it isn’t minor) with supplements that have no side effects, along with fasting (autophagy is life saving for my exhausted brain) and eating healthy. I’ve talked about this a few times, so feel free to look through my comment history.

Sadly the side effects of antidepressants (which I have tried, so speaking from my personal experience) are kind of a lost cause. Controlling it is not very achievable.

Hi, focus on a diet IDK about antidepressants, but there are lots of low dense calories foods. If you have money you can go to a nutritionist or there’s plenty on info on the internet, specially around fitness people related to cutting to reduce body fat. For example a banana is kind of dense calorically speaking but strawberries are much less, meaning you can eat more. Veggies tend to be low calory dense, eat high protein to feel more satiated.

But IDK maybe if you’re really skinny you might get advantage and clean bulk, hit some weight training and get an incredible body. I’m sure something like this will help aid your journey toward mental health.

I’m on sertraline and gained over 150 lbs over the last 10 ish years since I started taking it. I’m new to IF, but OMAD/IF has helped me keep my calories under control. There are some days where I do get pretty hungry but it’s never really unbearable as long as I keep my mind busy.

To be clear on my intake, I typically do 20:4 OMAD, i only eat one meal, but I do enjoy diet iced tea during the 4 hour window. I have not been keeping track of my weight, I find that it can only discourage me to do so, but my calories have definitely been reduced.
