IF and Keto and metabolism

Hi guys, so I’ve been doing IF, 3x a week for 36 hours each, and keto for about 2 months and have dropped 35 pounds, which is great as long as I don’t get gallstones lol. I have only really been tracking my net carbs and not my protein and fat, and definitely not my calories, but on days when I eat, I eat well and until I am full. I’m not gorging and overeating but I am eating slowly and making sure I am satiated. Will this type of diet have a negative effect on my metabolism long term? I’ve heard about permanent damage for being in starvation mode for too long, and while I am not eating for three days out of the week, I eat well on the other days, so, what do you guys think? Thanks in advance!

Answer

Starvation mode is a nebulous and rather exaggeratedly villainized creature. It is there, hisses every now and then but doesn’t really bite… unless you consider 10 or 100 fewer calories expended per day to count as biting. You know what the actual killer rabbit is? The 300 calorie smoothie you might end up drinking without registering. Or the fact that you might have set your mind to an exceptionally ambitious goal weight that requires ridiculously few calories and tons of activity per day to maintain. Or well-known medical conditions like metabolic syndrome or thyroid known to tangibly affect our energy expenditure for the worse. Please forget starvation mode exists. It may be intriguing to learn about, like the curious cosmic ray that every once in a lifetime may corrupt a byte in our RAM, but for all practical intents and purposes irrelevant.

It’s fine

I recommend https://www.amazon.com/End-Your-Carb-Confusion-Customize/dp/1628604298, it recommends eating as you are - to satiety, prioritizing protein. It also covers maintenance, key to stopping the yo-yo for me. Don’t do Audible, there are lists that are key. My library had the book.

Sounds like you are doing great work and seeing fab results. What are your fav healthy and quality of life gains so far?
