IF & BF

Hi. I’ve asked my doc but she’s pretty nonchalant about things and said not to worry. So. I’ve just started IF and it’s the first “diet plan” that I feel like I may stick to. I desperately need to lose weight after 2 back to back babies (for health reason, mentally, etc). My supply doesn’t seem to have taken much of a hit…yet… but if it does I have come to terms with that and am prepared to supplement my almost one years old. However, the very little research I was able to find says not to BF while fasting due to toxins being released through breast milk. Now I feel like I should wean more deliberately, but I’m not quite sure how to do it. Or even if it is necessary. Thoughts?

Answer

Toxins are going to be released through breast milk regardless (dioxins are one example.)

As long as your primary care physician is aware, you feel comfortable with it, milk supply is sufficient, etc, it should be ok.

Make sure you keep your physician in the loop with whatever changes you commence, and if you notice anything concerning/ abnormal resume a normal eating pattern.

Fast safely.(And good luck. Even if IF isn’t a current option for you, you can always give it another try after you’ve finished with BF!)

Answer

I help out in a few fasting forums and we’re always told not to recommend to bf women, but only as it can hurt the breast milk supply. I do however know that some people successfully IF and maintain supply so it just depends

Never heard anything about toxins, what toxins are supposedly released? Sounds non factual to me! All you’re doing is not eating for a small part of the day…. nothing magic, and certainly nothing that i’m aware of releasing any toxins!
