Best would be to have whichever one will make you happiest. It won’t really make much of a difference either way if it’s once per week.
I personally prefer natural sugar over many of the artificial sweeteners. I don’t like the aftertaste many of them leave.
They make Stevia versions of sodas that aren’t too bad. You can find these at places like Sprouts. I usually check to see if there is caffeine since I don’t need any more of that. Personally I wouldn’t touch sugar.
Neither are going to damage your health even a couple of times a week. HFCS is probably a better choice then aspartame as it’s less likely to cause sugar craving but it’s really up to how your body reacts.
The concerns with sugar is if you have too much regularly the glucose response damages your body (CVD and diabetes) but this effect only occurs if you consume too much sugar habitually. Exceeding the 36g added sugar limit a couple of times a week isn’t a big deal particularly if you are below it the rest of the week.
From a nutritional standpoint they are empty calories and should be avoided. Weekends I mostly ignore nutrition and eat what I want. If I’m out at a restaurant I’ll have a fountain coke for sure.
BTW if you would like to spread your treat out over the week the mini cans are not terrible. 25g of sugar/90 calories. I have a ginger ale one of those 2 or 3 times a week and just build it in to my nutrition plan.
