IF w/Muscle gain and lower body fats?

Hi all! Absolutely amazed with all the incredible results everyone is getting, keep up the amazing work. My wife and I just recently discovered IF and have been using the Fastic app - we are loving it!

I am 27 (M) and have only about 12% body fat. I have an athletic build and I am trying to build muscle mass. So my question is, has anyone tried IF whilst lifting and actively aiming to put on mass?

Also, what are people’s experience with IF and trying to get to low body fats (7-10%), is IF only this significant for those with higher body fats? (Not alongside muscle building, unless you can do both which I presume not?).

Thanks all! Keep the posts coming through, they’re super inspirational and look forward to sharing your success stories with her later.

Answer

One of the main benefits of Intermittent Fasting is to increase insulin sensitivity by retraining the insulin response via periods of rest (readas: no increased blood sugars). This is the hormone that takes sugar out of the blood and stores it in fat cells.

For people who are significantly overweight IF has a dramatic effect on their weight b/c a large portion of them are always eating, snacking and consuming highly sugared (or artificial sweeteners, which is the same thing to insulin) foods.

IF will not impact your desire to see muscle gains but don’t get sucked into bro-science of needing to consume protein immediately before/after a lifting session. Your muscle mass will repair, restore and grow during rest periods. In fact, one of the hormones secreted during fasting is human growth hormone.

As always, ymmv…
