IF with Type 2 Diabetes

I’ve been doing IF for some time, and now up to doing 20/4 OMAD, and it is working great. I have a friend who is probably 70 lbs. overweight and is interested, but has Type 2 diabetes. He is thinking he can’t do it, which may be true. Looking to see if others here with Type 2 diabetes can relate their experiences.

Of course, he would do this under a doctor’s supervision. Thanks

Answer

Type 2 diabetics can do IF, and in fact it may be really useful for them. Check out The Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung. Here’s a YouTube video from Dr. Fung as an intro to IF for Type 2 diabetics.

Of course Type 2 diabetics should talk with their doctor before doing IF. If they’re on insulin or other meds that affect blood sugar, they may need to modify the timing or amount of those meds.

My mom has Type 2 diabetes and did 5:2 IF for a while, with her doctor’s encouragement. The only reason she stopped was that the 5:2 schedule was hard to fit into her lifestyle. (I’ve gently suggested that 16:8 might fit better with her lifestyle. But it’s up to her and I’m not going to bug her about it.)

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes two years ago. I used IF kept an eye on my blood glucose. It stayed at a good level. Went to the Dr. November 2nd and she said my A1C is lower than hers and I am no longer type 2. I still check my blood sugar and will always be at risk for type 2. But am no longer on medications for it. My A1C is a little lower than 5% now so losing the weight is definitely a good thing.

IMO it can be wonderfully beneficial.

Here are some conversations about it.

Answer

I have T2D and find IF not only doable but quite beneficial in managing blood sugar (and, more importantly, managing insulin levels). But for me, I needed to get fully stable on a ketogenic diet before I could tolerate IF. The doctor’s supervision is also necessary.
