"If you break your fast incorrectly, you could die!"

I have been seeing people post that on this sub. It is unnecessary fear mongering. There have been many people here that have broken 20+ day fasts by eating a regular meal and most of them didn’t even have digestive discomfort, let alone being on the verge of death. I broke a 2 week fast with a large meal. Nothing happened to me, although I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.

Refeeding syndrome is rare and is largely avoidable if one is adequately hydrated and has electrolyte levels in balance. Some people have difficulty breaking long fasts, but the odds of having a serious health issue from it are very, very slim.

When I was 19 years old, I participated in a mass sit-in and group fast to protest Nixon’s invasion of Cambodia. Nothing but water and a little reefer for ten days. At the end of the protest, Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert and people were passing around hot dogs, ice cream, beer, and watermelon, and I ate it all. No ill effects.

But note, I was 19 years old and imagined myself indestructible.

Answer

They are small IF you take electrolytes, and this is the advice I see people giving.

In any case, it is much more sensible to err on the side of caution rather than pretend there are no potential risks as you are doing. After all, the risk is literally of death.
