I’m on day 6 of a 12 day fast and I noticed I’m bloated and have gained 3 lbs. What is going on?

From Day 1-5, I’ve had only mineral water, green tea, water with lemon, and a little cold brew coffee (black), and water with Nuun (electrolytes, 15 cal). I’ve walked (approx 10 miles/day) and had 2 HIIT workouts. I lost weight continuously.

On Days 5-6, I did all of the above and also started adding Pellegrino with some coconut water (110 cal). This likely made my fast “dirty” but I was really craving a different flavor. Coconut water had no added sugars. Additionally, I had even more carbonated water (1 can, no calories) and added ACV and more salt into my water throughout the day.

I’m fasting for weight loss more than autophagy and would like to drop as much fat as possible. Where have I gone so wrong?

Answer

I don’t know if the coconut water is causing the bloating or not, but it’s totally breaking your fast. It has too many carbs and is going to raise your insulin. If you really need something to tide yourself through the fast, have something like a little bone broth, pickle juice, or something that’s just fat.
