Ionized Alkaline water. Is it good?

Specifically Kirkland brand. Just wondering if it’s worthwhile to drink. Is it better than regular bottled water? Worse? No noticeable difference?

Answer

The research hasn’t been conducted that shows benefit. Any that exists isn’t good quality and funded by the companies trying to sell alkaline water.

My gut tells me there isn’t any benefit and maybe even could prove detrimental. There’s a reason our stomachs have the ph that they do. It’s important they remain acidic for digestion.

Answer

MD. Your body has many different mechanisms to keep pH at ‘homeostasis’ - typical reported average of 7.35-7.45. This is important because the enzymes in our body work at specific pH ranges. So while it may act in the stomach to increase the pH (not ideal, since the enzymes in the stomach work at low pH), any affect it might have downstream (as the water and hyroxide ions get absorbed into the blood stream) will be muted quickly by the numerous mechanisms to keep your body at its normal pH range so that our enzymes can work as they are supposed to. In a healthy human, I would imagine that with regular consumption of ‘alkaline’ substances your pH buffering system would just bolster itself so as to combat this new stimulus. Regular water is just fine, and much cheaper.
