Is Diet Coke ok to drink during fasting

Hey All,

Almost down 10 pounds during my first month of fasting.

I’ve been drinking lots of diet coke throughout to keep me up for work, etc. Just seeing any thoughts if this isn’t permissible as it will break your fast.

Thanks!

Answer

I drank it during my fast and I still lost weight, my blood sugar didn’t get a spike from it (and I’m a diabetic), the only problem I had was stomach pain from too much acidity. So I only drink it as a treat from time to time now. But if it works for you, you should follow that. I personally think it’s fine.

Answer

Studies show zero calorie sweeteners trick your body into insulin production, and that insulin production breaks your fast. So I only drink diet soda during my eating window. I read that information after buying a case of diet Dr Pepper 😀

Answer

To piggyback a bit on others (and trust me as a recovering Gatorade Zero/Vitamin Water Zero daily consumer I get it)…I read recently that the zero calorie/zero sugar drinks/foods actually trick your body into craving even sweeter things and you never really satisfy the urge. From a just cutting calories stand point aka CICO you can still make it work. But personally I found myself yo-yoing too much hence trying to really cut those all out and stick to light maple syrup as a sweetener in smoothies/oatmeal.

Diet Coke is junk food. Eliminating junk food is a step you can take to further your progress. Lots of people, though, do well losing the weight they need to without this step.

If though, right now, diet coke is helping you not eat and learn the habit of fasting, then it’s doing you a service and a favor.

You can try working in a few seltzer waters in the place of the diet coke. The bubbles are the fun part, more than the chemicals.

Honestly I don’t know and I am sort of confused. I still need to take some time to review the science behind all of this because I am still new. I will tell you I am consistent with my IF with eating better 2pm and 6pm but I still have my morning coffee with creamer because I am not ready to give that up. I walk a lot and have dropped 12lb since 10/22.

Answer

I stumbled upon IF through this guy’s video and he claims to drink “buckets” of Pepsi Max (Zero Sugar). According to him, the aspartame doesn’t cause an insulin event, which makes it ok for drinking during a fast. Diet Coke (and Coke Zero) also use aspartame.

I couldn’t find any hard evidence to back up that claim… but, seeing he is the same age as me, same height, similar starting weights, and I hope to see the same results… I have been drinking Coke Zero during fasts. So far I have lost quite a bit of weight, so if the Coke Zero is actually breaking my fasts, I’m still losing weight.
