most likely not, but if you are sensitive to soy without knowing you will probably find out then. Overly relying on any single food isn‘t the best choice though imo.

for any supposed effects on hormones a person would have to eat much more soy per day than a single block

I did this for many years on top drinking soy milk. I was a strict vegetarian (pescatarian now.) Then one day I randomly agreed to try the whole30 diet with my friend and OMG what a difference. If you are not familiar with the whole30 diet soy, gluten, legumes along with many other things are off limits for 30 days. I lost a lot of water weight. My face and belly weren’t puffy all the time. People thought I lost weight but I hadn’t. It was just excess water retention. I had more energy. That was back in 2018 and still to this day I no longer eat soy and gluten.

I would say yes.

  1. The phytoestrogens in soy can definitely affect you negatively if you eat too much.
  2. Soybeans possess a notoriously high concentration of phytic acid which is an anti nutrient that binds to certain minerals making them less absorbed by the body.
  3. GMO soybeans are genetically engineered and accumulate and absorb high levels of glyphosate when they are sprayed during growing season. Glyphosate is all sorts of bad.

Not to mention Soy crops are probably the most destructive of all the monocrops. They rob the soil of nutrients without giving back, they’re one of the pesticide laden crops and they are now almost all genetically modified. The major part of it goes to feed livestock, who get sick eating it. Some factory produced cuts of meat are now injected with extra soy. This is yet another reason to stay clear of factory-farmed animals: save yourself and the environment from soy.

Tofu has much less fiber than it’s whole-food-form counter part. Variance in a diet will always be the best, so mix up between types of legumes and processed forms for adherence. If you’re eating enough Whole Foods you don’t need to consume extra protein, but of course if you like the qualities of the food then do so.

Hi!! I did this for 2.5 years when I lived in Japan - I ate literally a block of tofu every single day, and it was my main source of protein. About 2 years in (maybe sooner, but I didn’t make the connection until 2 years), I realized that it was making me break out - BAD. I had had clear skin all my life, and figured it was just the air in the city making me break out, but nope - sure enough, when I ate tofu, I would break out horribly like clockwork a few days later.

Fast forward to today, and it isn’t any better. It’s not just tofu, either - it’s soy protein, soy beans, any kind of soy. I basically gave myself a soy intolerance through over consumption. I know there’s conflicting research about the relationship between soy and hormones, and I never got tested, but I did enough trial and error to know for a fact that after those 2 years of daily tofu, eating soy throws my skin completely out of whack. And that wasn’t always the case!

Although it gave me energy and was delicious (I’m back in Japan and haven’t touched tofu and I miss it SO much), that just goes to show that you can overdo it. Everything in moderation!

TLDR: Yes, you can eat a block of tofu a day. But that doesn’t mean you should! You might give yourself a soy intolerance, like I did.
