Is fruit ok if you're trying to go sugar free?

Along with my fast I’m also trying to break my sugar addiction habit. I’ve cut out candy and dessert but have a box of tangerines at home. Is it ok to have 1 or 2 during my window?

Answer

Fruit is nature’s candy.

If you’re trying to give up all sugar, it might be a problem. But fruit and even candy is fine with regular IF.

Answer

If your goal is to break a sugar addiction, then perhaps take a short break from fruits. While healthy, they still contain large amounts of sugar, and may delay your progress. Reincorporate fruits after you no longer have a problem with sugar.

Answer

Fruits are much better option than sugar, but they are still high in calories. (Remember that CICO still applies if weight loss is your goal).
I think it’s OK to have some fruit but don’t overdo it, and try to stick to low glycemic index fruit like citrus, apples, cherry, and avoid high glycemic fruits like mango and pineapple.

Answer

It is OK. At least for me, it’s working perfectly! In the beginning, I have eaten even two servings of fruits per meal, and I’m on TMAD. One fresh fruit and one as a dessert. I cut fruits in small pieces and cook them with water and a bit of lemon juice. Small bowl of this compote, and I was satisfied. I’m skipping it now. One serving of fresh or frozen fruit per meal is enough for me. My sweet tooth is asleep. Love it!

If you find that you are struggling to give up sugar, consider giving up fruit for a few weeks as well to readapt your tastebuds. If your main concern is reducing glucose spikes, eat your fruit after a normal meal and not as a snack or as a starter.

Fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with lower mortality risk (https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/fruit-vegetable-consumption-reduce-risk-death) and I personally would hesitate to cut out fruit long term.
