Is it bad to break my fast late at night?

I’m about to start fasting again but I’ve recently got a job where I usually get off at 930 ish and I’m home by 10. I don’t like eating on the job and I like to eat my meals at night with my family rather than mid day alone. I’m just concerned that breaking my fast at 930 isn’t the best idea considering how late it is. Also, I’m trying to do 20:4 intermittent fasting just to be clear.

Answer

Late is relative to what time you go to bed. If you eat at 9:30 and then go to bed at 11, your digestion can disrupt your sleep, but if you eat at 9:30 and don’t go to bed until 2 or 3am, I don’t think it would be an issue.

Answer

For weight loss and fasting itself it shouldn’t really matter. You’re better off figuring out a schedule that works for you so it can be maintained long term. The calories in/out and lenght of the fasting itself will take care of the weight loss.

Enjoy your late night meal :)

Answer

I break mine normally anywhere from 7 pm to 10 pm.

A couple days I’ve had to switch it up, like recently I went to the state fair and broke my fast in the morning and was able to wait until the next night to eat and get back on schedule.

So, the body’s insulin response is the best in the morning, worst at night. Also our circadian rhythm follows the sun. This is why I usually skip dinner instead.

That said, I also get wanting to eat with your family. I’m not sure what the best choice would be but if you’re able to break your fast at night and still achieve your goals and are healthy, maybe eating with family isn’t so bad. At the end, making an informed choice is important. I would prefer eating with my family too. 💛
