Is it normal for the hunger to disappear?

I’m 72 hours in. The worst has been headaches but I got some electrolytes. I’m reallly surprised though at the fact that I haven’t experienced hunger as bad as I thought! Going into the fourth day and I havent felt hungry! Why is this?

Answer

your hunger hormone ghrelin will go up and down according to your usual meals…once your body moves to fat burning (aka ketosis) you have less levels of ghrelin and you have increased noradrenaline, cortisol (i think) and human growth hormone. these give you energy but dont make you feel hungry. (dr fung calls it increased “sympathetic tone” i believe)…when your body moves away from needing sugar (stored glycogen) to run itself and is instead using stored body fat as what happens with a multiday fast, you do not feel hungry because your body does not need sugar to power itself and instead is feeding on its fat stores which in most of our cases, are plentiful and do not run out lol (not having the constant insulin spikes that we get when we are eating carbs also means that you will have less hunger on something like a keto diet when not fasting too)

Kudos!

I do a 96 hour fast twice a month. Day 2 is ALWAYS the hardest for me… after that I’m not ever hungry though it can be hard for me when I smell really great food I think cause senses are somewhat heightened which has to be some primal super power sort of thing. :-) The hunger feeling comes from a chemical/hormone or something (can’t recall the name) but it decreases with time so you feel less hungry, totally norm.
