Is it okay to drink very low calorie drinks when fasting?

I enjoy drinking gatorade zeros but they have 5 calories and I’m wondering if this will compromise my fast in any way?

Answer

There will be differing opinions on what qualifies as breaking a fast.

My take is, if you are going to fast, then fast. It shouldn’t be too difficult replacing these “low cal” drinks with a glass of water during your fasting period, most of which you likely sleep through.

Answer

It depends on why you’re fasting. My general rule, if you’re fasting for certain physiological states, perhaps for a specific medical or religious reason, stick to just water - though some folks will still allow coffee and tea. If you’re fasting for wellness or as a caloric reduction, the number that gets thrown around a lot is 50 calories or less will usually not spike any meaningful response from the body. So most substances, especially if it helps in your journey or gets you to your next meal without eating, is generally worth it.

I have 1 or 2 of these a day and have lost over 25lbs now in two months. Sure as heck hasnt dented my results. However i do a 1 hour workout a day, cardio, where i am majorly sweating… so required for me to have. I also check my blood sugar levels and it does not spike me at all. If you have a glucose meter or even better a freestyle libre, you can see what would break your fast.

Answer

“recent research suggests that it can cause blood sugar levels to spike in other populations. A small study found that sucralose elevated blood sugar levels by 14% and insulin levels by 20% in 17 people with severe obesity who didn’t regularly consume artificial sweeteners “ sucralose is the sweetener in G zero.

In my opinion water or coffee, perhaps bubbly or some other naturally flavoured water (haven’t seen the science on that though)

Answer

The goal in intermittent fasting is to kick your body into “burning calories mode”. If you consume something with calories during your fast, your body will just go into “storing these calories” mode (some of them as fat), so DONT! Try stick to your fast (unless you’re diabetic or feeling like youre going to faint). Good luck✌🏼
