Is it possible to do intense workouts while on a prolonged fast?

I’m thinking about doing a prolonged 6 day fast and assuming I’m taking all the required electrolytes, would I still be able to continue my intense workout routine or should I take it easy for the duration of the fast?

Answer

I commonly do 3 hour bicycle rides with varying levels of intensity while fasting. The first day it’s not really an issue as your muscles still have glycogen. The following days you will probably feel a little off and empty. The more fat adapted you are then the easier your workouts will be and the more intense you can go. I’m guessing by the question that this is your first long fast. Therefore, I would suggest dialing things back a little bit initially and just listening to your body. The more you incorporate fasting or follow a low carb protocol then the easier it will be to keep the intensity while fasting.
