Is it worth it to ease into an extended fast by eating keto for a few days first?

I used to do extended fasts (7+ days) a lot but haven’t in a while. I don’t eat a crazy amount of carbs normally but definitely not in ketosis.. should I ease into it by eating keto for a few days first? I want to set myself up for success and I am curious how much easier it’d be. Thanks in advance.

Answer

I think it makes it easier as eating a keto diet reduces fluid retention and minimizes sugar cravings. I’m not saying fasting is easy, but I’d rather go in after a few days of low carb/keto than filled with carbs.

This Thanksgiving reminded me how hard it is to jump from carb to fasting. I’ve found that fat or protein snacks, like literally a piece of chicken dipped in oil a few times throughout the day, helps wean me into fasting much more smoothly. Idk what the science is there.

From my own personal experience, 100% yes. I did strict keto before I found out about extended fasting (I was doing IF/OMAD + keto before it), and let’s just say I got a bit too excited about the possibility of fasting and eating “whatever” I wanted (within reason, of course) on re-feed days.

The last few weeks I reintroduced a lot of carbs, and I feel I had an easier time when I did keto or at least very low carb (about 40 carbs or less) during refeed days, as opposed to including far more sugars and carbs.

That said, I’ve seen tons of posts of other people who successfully reached their goals without doing keto, and eating whatever they wanted on refeed days (the reason why I tried it too), so it’s not like you can’t tweak your food later on.

Answer

Not really. You should just jump right in. You’ll be on force ketosis by day two. = Strong cravings first two to 4 days. Mental strength required first 4 days But it’s fast enough to reach a the primal goal saves a lot of money.

Implementing a keto diet will take up to two weeks to be fully in ketosis. = little cravings no mental strength required that much. But it takes a long time. It’s good but not great.
