Is "plain" shredded wheat cereal nutritionally good for you?

I have consumed Post Shredded Wheat (bite-size) for quite some time now. It has always drawn me in by its simplicity when it comes to ingredients: Whole Grain Wheat. But… it also lists BHT as “to preserve freshness” Doing a bit of research on BHT, I haven’t found too many arguments against it, even though it is a man-made laboratory chemical.

I was curious about others takes on this cereal. Do you feel it is a nutritional option for a meal or snack? I prefer to eat mine mixed with flaxseed and almond slivers with unsweetened almond milk. In general, most cereals are packed with sugars, I have always been drawn to shredded wheat because of its minimal ingredients.

To my knowledge, it’s a better snack that virtually any other major cereal…but that bar is overall quite low. If you like it and don’t overindulge you’re probably in the clear - but maybe something like unsweetened oatmeal would be an improvement in terms of health benefits. Processed wheat doesn’t really do much for us other than provide calories.

Answer

No I wouldn’t call that healthy one bit. Should absolutely not be part of healthy diet of Whole Foods.

Is it going to kill you no. Is it providing any nutrients or boosting your health absolutely not.

And also BHT has been shown to cause various types of diseases in animals including cancer. I wouldn’t put it in my body.

It’s great as long as you aren’t getting too much wheat in general. I find I get quite enough grains without having to seek out foods that are 100% wheat. If you think you need the fiber, carbs, and gluten and aren’t getting them elsewhere, then shredded wheat is high in all those things. Personally I think the flaxseed and almonds are the healthier parts of what your describing, shredded wheat really doesn’t contain nutrients at all other than starch, fiber, and gluten.

I do cyclical keto, with emphasis on being pretty clean during my 4-5 days a week of ketosis. But still, I have a positive opinion of that stuff.

I’m actually not too sure about almond milk though; and there isn’t enough there for me to actually buy and eat it. But if I ate it on my weekend it would displace far worse things.

If you can’t go two days without carbs, practice.
