Is there a point to consuming >30g protein at once?

I’ve heard that, at max, the body can only absorb 30g of protein every 2-3 hours.

Given this, is there much point in consuming lots of high protein foods at once, or like drinking a choccy milk (say) over 10 minutes when it contains 40g protein? Becayse while you may be hitting your daily protein target, you’re not actually absorbing it all and thus aren’t getting all the benefits.

Answer

Lots of variables such as your size/muscle mass. That 30g thing is a myth. You will absorb all of it. Even if you were to eat 100g in one meal. Not all of it would go to muscle synthesis, but your body will still absorb it all.

Answer

Myth, I know people who exercise a lot, and eat one meal a day. They are still growing in mass.

Just imagine you being a hunter, you get your kill, you would eat as much as you could before it goes bad or is taken from you by other predators. It makes no sense at all that your body would just waste all that precious protein.

Answer

>Based on the current evidence, we conclude that to maximize anabolism one should consume protein at a target intake of 0.4 g/kg/meal across a minimum of four meals in order to reach a minimum of 1.6 g/kg/day. Using the upper daily intake of 2.2 g/kg/day reported in the literature spread out over the same four meals would necessitate a maximum of 0.55 g/kg/meal.

Answer

Correct, there is no point. Let’s assume you ate five 500 calorie meals throughout the day. If you ate nothing but a pound of chicken at at every meal (that’s roughly 500 calories) you can see that that would be a complete waste of money. Yes, your body would “use” it, but not in an efficient way.

Obviously, eating much less chicken with white rice is a fraction of the cost and your body would utilize the energy much more efficiently.
