Is vegetable fat unhealthy?

I’ve seen it being demonised but it doesn’t have much saturated fat compared to poly and monosaturated fats. What’s the issue then?

Answer

If you’re asking if vegetable oils (mostly PUFA) are unhealthy vs saturated fat, they’re not. There’s a lot of conspiracy theories going around about them right now and it seems to be the newest health “trend.” Vegetable oils are more heart healthy and the evidence that we have shows time and time again that saturated fat intake should be limited. Most of the problems that we have in this country are from overconsumption however. I’ve seen plenty of people trying to claim that these oils cause weight gain and other issues and these are unscientific claims.

Ultimately I prefer olive or avocado oil to get monounsaturated fat which is great for lowering LDL cholesterol, but there’s nothing wrong with cooking in any vegetable or “seed oil”.

Answer

Health trends seems to be like fashion — fat evil, sugar evil. We are in the sugar evil phase, where since vegetable oils are associated with the non-meat side, it is evil. Honestly, the real answer is moderation. Everything is best in small servings.
