Is your number of trips to the bathroom a sign of too much water?

Obviously the more liquid you put in, the more will come out. But if you’re going to the bathroom 6-7 times a day, is that a sign you’re drinking too much water?

Your body can only absorb so much at once, so it’s recommended to take small sips throughout the day rather than chugging a lot at once every couple hours. As the other commenter said, if your urine is totally clear, you should slow your intake.

Answer

You would know if you had water poisoning. I would prefer to have a root canal without pain relief then deal with those muscle cramps again :)

If you don’t have any signs of water poisoning then you are not drinking too much. Nearly clear urine is ideal, 6-8 times a day is the ideal number of bathroom breaks. The more dilute your urine is the easier time your body has expelling things it needs to get rid of, even if you are susceptible to kidney stones/gout simply drinking enough will avoid them because you will never have enough uric acid concentration for them to develop.

The warning signs to talk to doctors about is if you have trouble holding it / are up constantly at night.

Your pee should be slightly less than clear, if its crystal clear, you may be overhydrated, if it has the slightest tint of yellow, its more likely youre in the clear (ironically, haha), but that doesnt count vitamins dying your pee… anyways i find this funny because due to high blood sugar i had for a while i was peeing every 10 minutes sometimes 20-40 times per day, dont worry, xD 6-7 times a day isnt bad as long as youre getting enough electrolytes, completely normal in fact, healthy.

Answer

I don’t think 6-7 trips is too much, that’s pretty common if you are fully hydrating yourself, assuming you are, and your urinations are full (in other words, not feeling like you have to go but don’t end up peeing much - that could be a sign of diabetes). What you are is basically peeing about every 2 hrs while awake? That’s fine.

A lot of times people go more or less often because they trained their bladder. I used to go every 2 hours or so, but after high school and then a 7 to 3 job for a while, my bladder was trained enough that I only had to go to the bathroom about three times a day.

I don’t recommend it, it can cause a lot of pain if you’re not careful with your bladder.

If you’re SUPER concerned you can always get a blood test. The hospital I go to has a cheap blood draw at 40$ where they train new nurses. Usually, they’ll have the parameters on the chart. But honestly, you should just look at your urine color and ask your doctor what other warning signs to look out for would be. I’m pretty sure they don’t care unless you’re going to the bathroom a lot more than that.
