Just finished my 2nd 3 day fast, how soon can I do another?

I enjoyed how I felt, but I don’t want to hurt myself. I’ve done it twice but there’s been almost year in between the first and second time I did one. I know I don’t have wait a year but is doing it once or twice a week too much? Or is it something that should only be done once a month or 3 months?

My BMI is 36, a good amount of it is fat, so I’m not risking being under fed, and I would reduce how often I do them as I lose weight.

Thanks in advance.

Answer

You can do them very frequently. For a few months I was doing three days fasting and then one day of eating. As long as you have adequate body fat to fast, are healthy, and listen to your body you should be good.

I’m a huge Dr. Fung fan, and his advice is to refeed half the length of a fast before continuing. (There are other guidelines for extended fasts, but that’s a basic rule of thumb.) So if you fast for 2 days, you’d want to eat for one day before starting again. He typically refers to an eating day as two solid meals in a 6-8 hr period, fwiw. If you fast for 4 days, you’d want to eat for 2 days before jumping in again. This would ensure that you’re not damaging your metabolism.

Answer

In my opinion, rolling fasts cannot hurt you provided you are obese. If you were only slightly overweight or in good shape, I certainly wouldn’t recommend extended fasting. I have a bit of experience in this area, I have been doing rolling fasts for the past two months and have experienced some great success, but then again I am morbidly obese.
