Just got off a 28 day water fast. Problems. Dehydrated + Food not digesting.

Hey reddit, I just got off a 28 day water fast from January 3rd to January 31st. I was originally planning for 30 days but I cut the fast short and broke it and just went to the doctor because I started getting nauseous to the point where I was dry vomiting out nothing. To break my fast I tried eating some steamed carrots and peas with bone broth. I vomited that out too. Whenever I drank water I vomited that out too. I went to the emergency room and they put me on the IV and put electrolytes into my veins in the form of saline and gave me some anti nausea medication. After I got back home I got something to eat but it wasn’t a lot of food. I ate two graham crackers with some chicken soup. I didn’t even eat much of the chicken at all because I got bloated after I drank a little bit more water. I took a few sips of the broth at best and just got rid if it. Now I’ve been sitting here on the couch for hours after eating and the food I ate is just sitting in my stomach. I do not think my food is digesting like at all. Anybody got a clue what could be going on?

Answer

Were you taking electrolytes during the fast?

Is this your first prolonged fast?

Have you checked the electrolyte levels in your blood?

28 days is a very long time, and you need to be very careful while breaking the fast, especially the first week.

Thia is just a layman summary but essentially when you are fasting, your cells get depleted but your blood tries to preserve an acceptable nutrient balance. Then as you start eating again, the cells sense food coming in and start drawing it from thr blood stream. I ghink phosphorous was one especially important part that needs to stay stable in the blood, but if there isn’t enough entering your blood stream while the cells are absorbing it from the blood, it may run low in the blood which can be quite dangerous, so you need to make sure you are getting enough phosphorous into your blood along with electrolytes.

Considering your condition, I would seek out medical treatment again, and make sure they run blood tests to measure the blood nutrients, especially electrolytes and phosphorous, and preferrably I suppose take a phosphorous supplement.

Whatever it may ve, it seems like a medical emergency to me.
