Keto Before Extended Fast - A Experiment Gone Right!

HI, I’m A Dietitian (RD), who’s been experimenting with fasting for many years. I have been on a plant-based diet for the past 8 years, but recently reintroduced fish and meat into my diet for a 3-month trip to Peru (I wasn’t sure if vegetarian options would be easy to find). As such, I was excited to test a theory I’ve held for a while; would going from keto to an extended fast be easier mentally and physically? I figured that doing keto long enough to have ketone levels drop to baseline (for me, it took 11 days, although I waited until 13 to make sure) would allow my body to over the general unconformability and “keto flu”.

The results: By far the easiest extended fast of my life. No hunger whatsoever, no cravings, no feeling “weird” at all until the 3rd day. I typically fast for 4-5 days, but since I wasn’t completely use to eating meat or feeling full all the time and lost more weight than desired in keto, I decided to end the water fast at 72 hours.

I’m wondering if anyone else has tried this? Seems like a really easy trick to get into an extended fast without much of the side effects.

FYI - I’m 28, Male, average body weight of 133, and consumed \~1800 kcal/day on keto keeping under 50 g carbs (not net carbs); and lost 8 lbs in total. I don’t want to lose, but enjoy the feeling of fasting, the challenge of willpower, and fast occasionally for “religious” ceremonies (i.e ayahuasca, yopo, peyote, etc).

Answer

I tried the following.

7 days Omad - keto calorie deficient meal.
5 days Omad - super low cal soup only.
18 days water fast

During this time I was doing allot of exercise, before the water fast I actually did intense cardio long distance walks (4 hours). After these 4-5 weeks I lost 40 pounds. Moved from 220lb to 180lb It was insane. By easing into it like this made it really easy but I will say that since then, if I want to water fast I just got all in and do a 180 change straight to water only. Currently on a day 7 of 14 day water only fast. Once you do these long term water only fasts for me they get easier.

I know it’s a little different to what you ask, but I thought I’d share my experience.
