Just from personal experience in fasting these are the following hungers I’ve learned
bored hunger: I have no stomach rumblings or even a desire to eat but I think I should or I just do. I’ve managed to forgo this type when fasting. When I break fast sometimes I do sit and just eat nuts mindlessly. Still needs work.
cravings: a desire for food whether hungry or not. I have caved to this more than I would like during my fasting but it’s usually when the cravings are so strong I literally can’t think of anything else. One thing I’ve noticed from fasting is that I don’t crave unhealthy food. The foods I most often crave are nuts, salmon, and salad.
hunger: a physical desire to eat, accompanied with stomach rumblings. I’ve learned to tune this out because I recognize this is regularly caused by the hormone ghrelin and will pass in time.
So those are the big three for me. Anyone have any others?
Transition/meal hangover hunger: the Dessert effect? For me, it’s after dinner, especially. The closet binger inside, maybe. That feeling when you take your last bite and then it’s this vague but powerful sense of ‘oh no, I don’t want to be done with that cool activity—I forget what else I wanted to do next other than eat forever. Maybe I could just grab a few more nuts…’ edit, maybe this is part of why I love fasting—eliminates that transitional moment for awhile!
