Magnesium multivitamin on an empty stomach?

TL DR: can I have a multivitamin for my magnesium requirement on an empty stomach?

I’ve been gradually progressing in my IF journey and I’m still wondering if I’ll make it to multi day fasts.

Here is a summary so far: Week 1 16:8 with 3 meals Week 2 16:8 with 2 meals Week 3 18:6 with 2 meals Week 4 OMAD+ (soup with protein and 3 hours later dinner)

All meals are keto. It has been remarkably easy since maybe day 5 and the progress has always been quicker and easier than planned. I thought I’d be on 16:8 for a month before I was ready for the next step, but my hunger is just naturally going down so much.

I guess next week would be OMAD and then from there my first 24hr+ fast. So I’m starting to look at what magnesium products are on the market where I live (Eastern Europe).

OK, that was background, here is the question:

I can find a multivitamin that is very well priced and has 150mg of magnesium citrate. But will my stomach be able to handle all the other general vitamins if its empty? Before I’d get very nauseated if I accidentally take my vitamins before breakfast. What has been your experience?

Answer

Well only you can find out. Me? I can probably swallow a few rocks and be ok, others get the runs.

So take them, either your body will agree with it or it will not, which won’t be the end of the world nor hurt anything long term.

I take the 400mg cheap pills (poor absorption, big to compensate). My usual problem is constipation so I wish they worked on me like they do on others.

Answer

I was able to take magnesium and potassium and vit D/K and b12 during my fasts without an issue but didn’t try a multi-vitamin. The time I took Vit C when fasting I felt sick for a while and had some stomach upset.

Answer

Straight up magnesium will give you diarrhea and not much will be absorbed. I keep mentioning magnesium glycinate on this sub. I take it 2 hours before bed and it helps me sleep. It doesn’t irritate my stomach or GI tract.

Answer

What I do with my my vitamins is crush them up in some warm water. It makes them less aggressive in my stomach. That being said, keep in mind magnesium citrate is still a laxative, although you’re taking very little of it, you still may feel some digestive discomfort just because of its natural effects.
