Magnesium (Supplements or not?)

Reddit is full of people taking magnesium supplements. Are these so necessary? I see people taking them even though they reach RDI, what is your opinion about?

Answer

good for muscle cramps and restless legs syndrome. and i guess if my body’s base level of magnesium is too low to resolve those issues without supplements, it probably needs supplemental magnesium for whatever else magnesium is needed for as well. if that makes sense.

Answer

Magnesium deficiency is one of the most common out there these days. Most people can benefit from a good quality magnesium supplement. If you’re unsure, I would get some blood work done to see where you’re at (if you care) and base supplementation on those results.

As a distance athlete, I found them invaluable to reduce/ prevent cramping at night. It also functions as a sleep aid (side benefit). It’s an essential electrolyte. If you’re not physically active you certainly don’t NEED to take it, but it does have distinct benefits. It’s also good for cardiovascular health.

I take magnesium glycinate powder everyday with Vit d 5000 units. Stops my aches and pains.

Mag deficiency is widespread and out current blood level testing is crap. Not reflection of true mag levels in body.

I work on the premise of mag: calcium balance ratio os 1:1. Not on calcium with such high vit d intake.

Work in a hospital. Just about all our patients are Mag deficient. Spend a fortune giving these patients Mag through intravenous route. Either they truly are deficient or our current testing serious needs a relook.

Answer

Magnesium helped with my RLS for a little bit . Eventually after taking I think 300mg daily for around a month I started to get diarrhea. cut down to half the amount and shakey legs is back. But for anyone reading this that’s looking for RLS relief . I have had recent success with taking 10-20,000 IU of D3 . That so far has helped more than magnesium for whatever reason .

Answer

Something like 60% of the general population has clinical magnesium deficiency and perhaps more have “sub-clinical” deficiency. This is in part due to diminishing soil quality. Mag deficiency is actually a widespread problem, at least in the US. Probably elsewhere too.

Answer

I’ve been prescribed magnesium because of vasoconstriction in the brain. It’s been helping bit but finding out I have a rare vascular syndrome really threw me. I cant take cold meds/other over the counter things people wouldnt think about or smoke/drink because I could stroke out before 25 y/o. I was even IV injected with it, it burned bit apparently potassium burns more.
