Personal anecdote:

I started adding MIO to all my drinks a few months ago. I wanted more electrolytes to prevent cramps post workout.

After about 2 weeks of adding it to all my water, I started having diarrhea each morning. This is abnormal because i eat healthy and exercise daily.

I woke up each day with a swollen painful gut, nausea, and spent 2-3 hours passing gooey mucus. The mucus was the dead lining of my intestines. I started having bloody stools and sought medical attention.

I had to take a leave of absence from work. I met with a gastroenterologist to get screened for crohn’s. I met with a nutrition and wellness coach.

I found articles online that said Acesulfame Potassium ACE-K and Sucralose can cause IBS-D and crohn’s like symptoms in some people by killing off their lactobacillus gut bacteria.

I stopped consuming MIO and added probiotic yogurt with blueberries to my diet. All my symptoms immediately went away.

Answer

it’s probably fine if you have a glass or two of this flavoured water a day. likely not good if you want to flavour all the water you drink every day. moderation is key to healthy, sustainable lifestyle.
