One small sample shared by a bias (plant based website). Look for the meta analysis and you’ll find higher protein (.7-1 ish) grams per lb + resistance training is much more optimal than lower protein. It’s basically insurance to provide an ideal condition for muscle growth. Sure, some will be ok with less, but odds are most won’t.
Showing one small study on overweight untrained subjects that leads to a different conclusion than most data do is not really something significant to think about on its own. It just means they didn’t see a statistically significant effect on lean body mass in this particular study. There’s a reason science education emphasizes not overinterpreting the results of any one study.
I have two minds about it. A lot of data suggest not needing much protein, but anecdotal evidence suggest that it helps. One thing is for sure, protein is more filling and more thermogenic, so it’s good for weight loss and bodybuilding.
