New to fasting - can I still run my normal distance?

I’m new to fasting, I’ve only done it once or twice in the past for religious purposes, but now I’m approaching it for health reasons and to shed some weight. I’ve read through a lot of posts, and people say they exercise while they are fasting, but I’m wondering exactly how much exercise others do.

I’m a runner, and I run at least 6 miles every day. Sometimes, I am so hungry after my run, or at least a few hours after my run … I wanted to try a 48-hour fast, but I’m nervous I’ll feel sick from not eating after my run.

Are there other runners out there that put in a lot of miles and have no issues fasting?

Answer

Do you fuel with carbs before your runs? You will probably struggle if you’re not fat adapted for your running.

If you do fuel before runs, maybe try doing some fasted runs (as in not eating before the run in the morning) for a month or two. You’ll still have plenty of glycogen from the evening beforehand but they will be a little harder for your body to access.

Even better would be to do intermittent fasting with your window after your run. That way you can refuel post-run and then you’ll also be forcing your body to use more fat on your next run. This is how I go for my 6-10 mile runs and I love it.
