New to prolonged fasting- but willing to give it a go!

I’ve been having a rough past few months where I have noticed I’ve been binging snacks, living less actively, and having less energy. I have gained about 8 lbs in the past few months, and need to make a change. I read up on the benefits of fasting, and am here to say I’m wanting to try! Any tips or tricks to get through my first prolonged fast would be super helpful. The first is: should I set a goal of 7 days, or let my body decide when to stop?

Answer

Have you done an extended fast in the past? Some people can jump into a week-long fast, but many of us have better luck developing our “fasting muscle” by starting with a 24 or 48 hour fast and adding a day or two to the next fast.

Do read up on the electrolyte recommendations listed above. I find I need them for any fast beyond 24 hours.

Best of luck!
