New to this: I have been moving my fasting window quite a lot - wondering if this is okay?

Hey all,

I have been doing a 7pm cut off and an 11am start for three weeks now and have lost 19 pounds lol. Lately, I have been moving the window around quite a bit. Usually it is something like - I have a late dinner and cut off at 9pm and will therefore wait until 1pm. Or on the weekend sometimes it’s much later - like midnight and then I won’t eat until 4pm.

Wondering if there is any research/evidence around this? Is that still okay or is it bad?

Thanks!

Answer

A lot of people say you should cut off eating at least 3 hours before bed, so your body can do some churning and digestion before you sleep. The reality is that it takes food six to eight hours to pass through your stomach and small intestine into the colon… and around 36 hours for your body to be totally done with it, and it gets excreted.

Moving the window around and changing the length of your fasts is said to be good because “it keeps the body guessing…” - again, this seems largely anecdotal and YMMV.

If you’re losing weight, it’s working. Keep going. Can it work better? Maybe… but do what fits in with your lifestyle.
